Sustainable Cities International co-hosted a workshop with the Vancouver Parks Board to engage youth in the issue of access to nature in Vancouver. The workshop, titled Greening the Greenest City, took place at YouthPolitik, the City’s civic education and civic leadership development program for young Vancouverites.

Youth map places in Vancouver that would be good locations for new tree plantings, food gardens and street to park conversions.

A number of creative activities were used to draw out the opinions of the young participants, addressing why access to nature is important, where new small parks should be located and how they should be designed.

Access to nature is one of ten goals established in the Greenest City Action Plan and the parks board is actively soliciting public input into street to park conversions, tree planting and the location of food gardens. This workshop feeds into the broader community engagement process that is underway.

After seeing some creative uses of public space and park designs, participants design their ideal street to park.
