In the lead up to the United Nations International Youth Day on August 12th, we will be profiling 5 of our interns and the work they have done to support youth-led development around the world.
Name: Barbara Dourley
Hometown: Toronto, Ontario
Internship Cohort: Jan-July 2011
Host City: Durban, South Africa
Barbara’s primary role in Durban was to look for ways to engage youth in the green economy. At the beginning of her internship, she identified and established a partnership with a youth organization, Youth in Action. Together, they organized and hosted a Youth in the Green Economy Roundtable seminar that engaged a diverse group of 160 youth. As an outcome of the seminar, a waste management project has been initiated and a park revitalization project is currently being designed by Youth in Action.
During her internship, Barbara focused her efforts on building the capacity of Youth in Action to take a leadership role in advancing green economy opportunities for youth. She created a community project management resource guide and she hosted a workshop for the YIA members who are managing the two green economy projects. As a result of the activities initiated during Barbara’s internship, the YIA team has adopted youth engagement in the green economy as one of their organizational causes.
What’s Next? Barbara will return to Canada in August to pursue a career with an international focus.
