Vancouver Reflections

Sarah Grulke, from Melbourne, Australia, has been interning in our Vancouver office for 3 months.

So I’m down to my last few days here in Vancouver, and it’s time to think back and reflect on all the fun I’ve had working as an intern here at Sustainable Cities. I came out to Vancouver two months ago from Melbourne Australia not knowing what I got myself into. I walked into the office on my third day in the country a little jet lagged and more nervous than I’d ever imagined. From here things were a little scary, being in a new country with no friends or family to fall back on. But as the saying goes ‘when in Rome’.  So I immersed myself in Canadian culture, talked to as many people as would let me and managed to gather up a couple of new Canadian friend’s phone numbers.

My internship began to develop, from tasks to writing reports and developing a research project on civic engagement in public space.

Over time I have grown comfortable in my place here and made many new friends both outside work and the wonder staff whom I work with. As autumn turned to winter I witnessed more rain then I could ever imagine and was lucky enough to see my first snow fall and build my very first snowman. The experience was breathtaking, like nothing I had ever witnessed before and will never forget.

During my work and life here I have overcome many challenges, many to do with busy contacts not replying to emails very quickly. It has taken many emails and a couple of phone conversations to pin down some of the busy contacts needed for my case studies. But perseverance prevails and challenges are meant to be overcome and like many occasions in my time here the feeling of exhilaration and accomplishment ensues. An example of this is my climb up Grouse Mountain, it seemed impossible and endless but once it had been achieved it will be looked back on as one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.

Now at the end of my time here I am sad to leave, but all my friends and family are at home waiting and so is the sun, beaches and summer time fun! Bring on the Aussie Christmas!

Vancouver will be sorely missed and never forgotten, and hasn’t seen the last of me.
